Due to an increase in criminal activity by Criminal Street Gang members in the Community of Castroville and as a direct result of the criminal activity that occurred over the 4th of July weekend in Castroville. The Sheriff’s Office conducted directed enforcement of the Community of Castroville over the past weekend. The Sheriff’s Office deployed a team of deputies to target Criminal Street Gang members engaging in illegal activities in the Castroville Community. The directed enforcement period was conducted over three days.

During this three day directed enforcement period deputies conducted numerous vehicle checks, pedestrian checks and traffic stops. This directed enforcement resulted in the arrest of eighteen persons over this three day period for fresh charges. During the directed enforcement period deputies recovered various types of narcotics to include marijuana, cocaine, heroin, LSD, ketamine and MDMA. Deputies also recovered two illegal weapons and two stolen vehicles during this enforcement period. It should be noted that approximately three quarters of the individuals arrested during this enforcement period were either criminal street gang members or criminal street gang associates.

CASES OF NOTE:

On 07-10-2015 at approximately 2309 hours, deputies conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle occupied by three individuals. The driver of the vehicle, Eric Perez-Reyes, was found to be unlicensed and on probation with a search and seizure waiver. Marco Velazquez and a sixteen year old male juvenile were passengers in the vehicle. Velazquez was found to be in possession of (19) bindles of cocaine and a scale. The juvenile was found to be violating the terms of his probation.

On 07-11-2015 at approximately 0118 hours, deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for vehicle code violations. The driver of the vehicle, Christian Ortega, immediately fled from deputies and led deputies on a pursuit through the City of Castroville. At the conclusion of the pursuit Ortega was taken into custody and found to be in possession of a controlled substance.

On 07-12-2015 at approximately 2255 hours, deputies attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the City of Castroville. The vehicle immediately fled from deputies and pursuit ensued. County Communications informed pursuing deputies that the vehicle was a reported stolen vehicle out of the City of San Jose. The pursuit terminated when the stolen vehicle was unable to negotiate a turn at the intersection of Tembladera Street and Preston Road, resulting in the stolen vehicle striking an occupied parked vehicle.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, Scotty Johnson, immediately fled from the stolen vehicle on foot. A foot pursuit ensued and Johnson was taken into custody a short distance away. A juvenile passenger in the stolen vehicle was cooperative and remained in the vehicle. The juvenile passenger was taken into custody without incident. The parked vehicle’s solo occupant was treated at the scene for minor injuries and declined being transported to the hospital. Johnson and the juvenile were transported to the hospital via ambulance as a precautionary measure due to the vehicle accident. Johnson and the juvenile were treated and released by the hospital and transported to the appropriate facility for booking.

This directed enforcement operation was a direct response to the actions of the criminal element in the City of Castroville. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is committed and dedicated to the safety of all residents of Monterey County. This operation was not a onetime effort and will continue to occur on a regular basis as the need arises to ensure the safety of the public in our communities.
