SUMMARY:

On October 21, 2015, Monterey County Sheriff’s Department Detectives, members of the Southern Monterey County Violence Suppression Collaboration, (comprised of law enforcement officers from Soledad, Gonzales, Greenfield, the California Department of Corrections, California State Parole, the California Highway Patrol and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office), served a state search warrant at 1049 Elkhorn Road in northern Monterey County, CA. The search warrant was to search for the evidence of child endangerment and illegal firearm possession.

During this investigation law enforcement officers viewed several subjects from 1049 Elkhorn Road, Watsonville, shooting high powered rifles and shotguns. These firearms were being shot in an unsafe manner across Elkhorn Road towards Elkhorn Slough and the Kirby Park recreational area parking lot. The suspects were identified. At least two of the suspects were found to be on felony probation and had been previously been convicted of felonies.

During the search warrant service at least 10 juveniles, from the ages of 1 thru 17 years old, were found to be staying in a trailer and shed’s on the property. The shed’s had no electricity, water, heating or plumbing. The trailer on the property had rotting floors, faulty electrical wiring, trash, dirty clothing and other refuse inside and out. The health of each and every child was endangered by the deplorable living conditions present.

A search associated with this property located 18 firearms, including high powered rifles, shotguns, semi-automatic pistols and revolvers. One of the firearms had the serial number obliterated. Thousands of rounds of ammunition and illegal, high-capacity magazines were located and seized. These firearms and ammunition were in the reach of the children. This further endangered the health of the children. The children were placed into protective custody by child protective services.

One suspect was wanted in Fresno County, CA for absconding from probation and walking away from a drug treatment program. This suspect was taken to Monterey County Jail and booked on child endangerment, firearm, ammunition and probation violation charges. Probation violation and child endangerment charges will be requested through the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office on the remaining subject’s.
